More than making coffee: unpacking OMF UK internships

For almost 10 years, the OMF (UK) team has been welcoming interns to the national office to work with the Communications or Serve Asia teams. It’s part of our passion to invest in the next generation of Christians and help them understand more of God’s heart for the nations. The internships enable participants to grow in their skills and confidence, preparing them for the world of work, by giving them the opportunity to try out new skills as well as develop existing ones. Past interns have helped plan conferences, train short-term workers, produce social media content and have grown in areas such as graphic design and writing.

“Our interns do
much more than make the coffee”

Our internships have three key elements:

  • Practical workplace experience in
    a mission environment
  • A short-term placement in East Asia
  • Mission and Bible training

The internships are flexible and can be tailored to meet the intern’s skills and interests. Our interns do much more than make the coffee; they get involved in real projects and make a significant impact. The Serve Asia Podcast was initially proposed by one of our Media interns, while Serve Asia interns have helped process many short-term mission applications – trips that can have a much longer-term impact. The short-term placement gives interns a chance to travel to a country or ministry in East Asia that excites them, with all the different smells, food, religions and climate, in a context where many do not know the name of Jesus. They have an opportunity to learn from the Church in East Asia, seeing how Christians there share the gospel of Jesus in all its fullness.

Exposure to Bible and mission training helps the interns to learn and reflect on their mission experience. Many previous interns have also commented that joining our daily prayer and devotional times in the office has encouraged their own spiritual growth. Our interns have ranged from school leavers to people looking for a change of direction in their career. Could someone you know be our next intern? We would love to hear from them!
